Wenlock
Edge runs ruler straight for 16 miles across Shropshre from
Northeast to Southwest. Although hard to believe, it is probably
easier to visualise the fact that this was once a coral reef
in a tropical sea, when one looks at this picture! But that
was after all some 420 million years ago. Today, although distinct
from a distance, The Edge seems almost to dissapear when approached
by car. The road which runs along it does not reveal the views
since much of The Edge is heavily wooded as the picture shows.

Once you've parked, a short walk will reward you with stunning
views. Majors Leap, on a particularly precipitous section
near Stretton Westwood owes its name to a Royalist Officer,
Major Thomas Smallman, who rode his horse right off the
cliff in order to evade his Parliamentarian persuers. Incredibly
his fall was broken by a tree and he escaped safely! His
family home Wilderhope Manor is a little further south.
