Gazing down from The Long Mynd the patchwork of the rich borderland fields seem to stretch endlessly. The Mynd is ringed with villages Woolaston, Minton, Myndtown, Asterton and Ratlinghope, pronounced 'Ratchup' whilst a thriving gliding club sits on the summit.

In summer, the rare ring ouzel can sometimes be seen flying above the high moors of The Long Mynd. The Males have a clear white cresent which is less marked on the females.
The Stretton hills are a haven for wildlife.

Harebells quiver in the grass on Caer Caradoc, and in early summer the bilberry - sometimes called the whortleberry, and once an important crop - flowers pink over the hills. In spring and autumn its tough, small leaves have a rose tint: the tasty blue-black berries can be picked in July and August. Heather and bracken grow on the hills and skylarks abound, so that on the final scramble up the crags the thin turf can at times seem to be alive with them.
