Nestling at the feet of craggy Caer Caradoc,
Church Stretton was developed by the Victorians, who saw that
it had many of the qualities of the spa town of Malvern - crysal
clear water bubbling from numerous spings, invigourating hill
walks and rejeuvenating air. It rapidly became the place for
retirement, amongst officers who could see the hills as replicas
in miniature, of those they had left behind in India. Most of
the buildings therefore are little more than a century old,
but many are black and white nonetheless, echoing the handful
of older buildings near the church and the tiny market square. |

The Church from which the town gets its name is built from
a peculiar striped stone and has two
much
weathered sheila-na gigs outside. The Strettons- All. Church
and Little derive their names from the Roman "Street".
which runs south along the border from Deva to Caerwent.
Cardingmill valley is typical of the deep, unexpected valleys
cut through The Long Mynd. The Light Spout waterfall issues
at the head of the valley , and can be quite spectacular
after periods of rain.
