The present bridge was completed in 1798 under the direction of Thomas Telford replaced an earlier one which featured a gatehouse illustrated in a contempory print on the bottom left.
Load Steet leads from the bridge into the heart of the town. Aptly named since this was where the tradesmen would load and unload their goods for passage. Bewdley became an incorporated borough in 1472, held its own markets and courts and enjoyed the privilege of using a coat of arms
 
The towns most famous son, Stanly Baldwin was born in Bewdley in 1867 and became Prime Minister three times. He held office during the General Strike of 1926 and eased the way politically for the abdication of Edward V111
